October 24 is International Climate Action Day – a global movement where climate change is highlighted all over the world to inspire people to take action and do their part in mitigating the climate crisis.

We know that climate action can seem daunting and might entail “saving the world”-type of pressure, but it doesn’t have to be the case. In fact, it is the small, consistent, everyday actions that can make a huge impact in the long run. Setting expectations and aiming for realistic, everyday changes makes it sustainable and more impactful.

Need some examples of some everyday climate action you can do at home? We’ve got you!

  • Reduce consumption. When you buy less, you waste less. Being mindful in what you purchase to cover the essentials.
  • Reuse what you have. Nothing ever really just “goes” away when you throw it out so reuse an item to the best of your ability. Better yet, when making a purchase, make sure you choose reusable items over single-use ones.
  • Repair before tossing an item out. More often than not, especially with today’s technology, most items are fixable or repairable so you can maximize a product’s full life cycle.
  • Recycle and understand how to sort your trash properly. Know which items are recyclable and which ones go to the trash to avoid contamination. This ensures that recyclable items are recycled and repurposed accordingly in the waste facility.
  • Conserve energy and water. Turn off the lights and your water when not in use. Want to take it a step further? Simply unplug appliances and chargers when not in use as these still consume energy when devices are on stand-by.
  • Start composting. It is not as hard as you think it is. For easy composting tips nataforall.com is an amazing resource to everything composting. And if composting your own waste is not your thing, you can also collect your at-home compost items and drop them off at your local composting site.
  • Drive less whenever possible. We are people of convenience but with a little bit of strategic planning you are able figure out a way to drive less and do more walking, biking, commuting or carpooling. You’ll get those steps in and stay healthy while you’re at it!
  • Support your local farmer’s market and small business. You’ll make less grocery trips (less driving!) when you are able to walk, bike, skateboard or what-not to get your essentials from your local farmer’s market and refill station.
  • Sign petitions. There’s really no excuse as everything is now online. You can simply register and support organizations close to your heart while you’re on your phone. https://www.change.org/t/climate-crisis-en-us is an amazing resource for active petitions that you can participate in.
  • Spread the word. A simple conversation with your partner, with your friends can go a long way. People are inherently good, they are willing to help and change for the better, they just don’t know how or where to start. Be an inspiration or an example of someone doing better, everyday.
