Something exciting coming your way! Every Saturday, your friends at HEI will be releasing some tips and helpful practices that can help you live a Truly Green Life through our Green Living Series. For those who have always been interested but don’t know where and how to start, this Saturday series is for you.

To jumpstart it all, we will talk about MINDFUL SHOPPING. We feel that any change starts from within, so it will come from you and the multiple choices you make each and every single day.

But first off, what is Mindful Shopping? There is no hard, dictionary definition of what it is, but based on our research, the concept of Mindful Shopping is a facet of mindful living where you practice being fully present in purchasing any items to avoid over-spending and unnecessary purchase/buying that is not used and eventually put to waste.

As Vivienne Westwood, a well-known successful fashion designer would put it – “Buy Less, Choose Well, Make it Last”. To expound further, we have put together a list of hopefully helpful tips to further guide your practice of Mindful Shopping:

1. Do Inventory Checks
It’s always helpful to keep track of items you purchase and how frequently you make those purchases. Some questions to ask, “Do I really need this item?”, “How often do I need it to make sure nothing goes to waste?”.

2. Make a List and Stick to It.
Coming from #1, then you’ll have a better idea of your purchases and be more equipped to separate the needs from the wants or necessities vs. indulgence. Specifically for grocery shopping, make sure you have a list and have the discipline to stick to it. When in doubt, always ask yourself if it’s a necessity or an indulgence.

3. Budget and Track.
Budgeting need not be daunting or completely restrictive. When you are more in tune with your purchase habits, assigning a budget and (re)allocating accordingly becomes easier albeit an actual fun way of responsibly managing your finances.

4. Create a Non-Shop List
We all go through this moment where we “absolutely must have this” and then it gets forgotten somewhere in your closet or expires after years of being untouched in your pantry. To help practice mindfulness, just simply create a list of things you wish you have not bought and/or wasted time on buying in the past and refer to it when the situation arises again.

5. Quality over Quantity
Less is more, value over volume. You’ve heard it before and we believe it. A good quality item will always outlast, outlive and outperform an item solely purchased for “more”. Be wary of sales and discounts as they encourage you to unnecessarily purchase things you don’t really need. Shopping per see isn’t necessarily bad so long as you practice mindfulness in all your purchases.

Making these intentional choices can help lay out the foundation of you living your Truly Green Life.
